At the beginning of his presentation, Professor Xu emphasized the significance of the major classical literature such as Huang Di Nei Jing, Shang Han Lun and Jin Gui Yao Lue as many of the contemporary diseases are well documented in the classical literature thousands of years ago.

Chinese Medicine Treatment Approach to Insomnia

The root cause of Insomnia based on the TCM concept is that the yang qi is unable to merge with the yin at night. Quote from Nei Jing: If the wei qi remains in the yang aspect will cause the yang qi to overflow hence one cannot fall asleep in the evening. [Nei Jing] also said that if the stomach is in disharmony then restless sleep will ensue.

Professor Xu said that Insomnia can be categorized into three aspects:

  • Difficulty in falling asleep
  • Early waking
  • Superficial sleep

You will learn the treatment approach for each of the aspects of insomnia based on the identification of the Six Channels. In addition, you will learn the different paired herbs to facilitate the yang merging with the yin.

Chinese Medicine Treatment Approach to Depression and Anxiety

Depression is one of the mental illnesses. It mainly has clinical manifestations such as depressed mood, anhedonia, loss of interest, and lack of self-confidence. Unpleasant feelings of not being able to handle something, are characterized by “fear, apprehension, worry, and anxiety”.
