Chronic Superficial Gastritis (Professor Fu Yanling)

First consultation: February 1995
Chief complaints: Upper abdominal pain for more than ten years.
History: Ten years ago, the patient due to improper diet suffered upper abdominal pain with the ensuing years being treated for this disorder. There was recurrent pain in spite of the treatment and often pain was experienced as a result of excessive cold food, alcoholic drinks. Gastroscopy confirmed that he was suffering from chronic superficial gastritis with occasional acid reflux, nausea, heartburn, difficult bowel movement with alternating dry or sloppy bowel. His pulse was thready and moderate and his tongue was red with yellow and greasy tongue coat. His complexion was slightly red and his hands and feet were cold.
Diagnosis: Complex heat and cold pattern with disharmony of spleen and stomach
Formula: Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang modified
Ban Xia 12g; Gan Jiang 8g; Huang Qin 10g; Huang Lian 3g; Dang Shen 10g; Zhi Gan Cao 6g; Da Zao 18g; Duan Wa Leng Zi 30g; Gao Liang Jiang 9g Zhi Xiang Fu 9g. Seven packs.
After the above medication, his upper abdominal pain was resolved as well as substantial improvement of acid reflux and nausea. His bowel movement was better than before. Continue with the above medication with modifications for a further 21 packs.
He recovered.
